The exhaust manifold on a boat works much the same way as one on a car. The manifold is made of cast metal, a pipe within a pipe. It collects hot gases from the engine, which are cooled by water housed within the outer casing. Without water to cool these gases, hoses and pipes would be destroyed. The manifold also keeps the water and hot gases separate, to avoid damage to the engine should water breach the compartment. Exhaust manifolds are critical parts that are very vulnerable to wear. Over time, rust, water, and corrosion can erode protective barriers. By the time cylinder compression is affected, it may be too late to save both the exhaust manifold, and the engine. Regular maintenance should not be  overlooked, and if your boat begins to run rough, take it immediately for a thorough inspection by a qualified marine technician.
