HOW TO APPLY INTERLUX NAUTICAL ENAMEL
- Mixing Stir well before and during use.
- Cleaner Mineral Spirits or Naphtha
- Thinning: Do not thin
- Ventilation and Humidity Control Apply in dry, well ventilated conditions, Avoid excessively humid conditions, over 80% relative humidity.
- Brush Natural bristle brush
- Roller Use a solvent resistant small closed cell foam roller
- Airless Spray: Tip Size: 0.33 mm/13 thou. Pressure adjust as needed.

Preparation
Bare Fiberglass
- Scrub the surface thoroughly with a stiff brush using soap and water.
- Flush with fresh water to remove the soap residue and allow surface to dry. Remove surface contamination by wiping down the surface with Mineral Spirits or Naphtha using the two-rag method.
- Fill any surface imperfections with approved filler for alkyd topside paint use. Sand the entire surface with 220-grit sandpaper until a flat matte finish is obtained.
- Wipe the sanding residue off the surface with Mineral Spirits or Naphtha using the two-rag method.
- If the surface is in poor condition and to achieve optimal results, use a primer approved for alkyd topside paints as per manufacturer’s instructions.
Previously Painted Surface – Good Condition
- Remove all traces of loose paint by sanding the entire surface with 220-grit wet-or-dry sandpaper; wipe surface clean with Mineral Spirits or Naphtha using the two-rag method before and after sanding.
- To achieve optimal results, use a primer approved for alkyd topside paints as per manufacturer’s instructions.
Previously Painted Surface – Poor Condition
- Completely remove old paint.
- After all old paint has been removed, follow preparation instructions for bare fiberglass.
Bare Wood
- Scrub the surface thoroughly with a stiff brush using soap and water.
- Flush with fresh water to remove the soap residue and allow surface to dry.
- Remove surface contamination by wiping down the surface with Mineral Spirits or Naphtha using the two-rag method. Fill any surface imperfections with approved filler for topside paint use.
- Sand the entire surface with 220-grit sandpaper until a flat matte finish is obtained. Wipe the sanding residue off the surface with Mineral Spirits or Naphtha using the two-rag method.
- If the surface is in poor condition, and to achieve optimal results, use a primer approved for alkyd topside paints as per manufacturer’s instructions.
Metals
- Apply a metal primer approved for alkyd topside paints as per manufacturer’s instructions.
- Do not apply Nautical Enamel directly to bare metal.
Clear Epoxy
- Nautical Enamel cannot be applied directly to clear epoxy. Clear epoxy when drying create amine blush which must be removed prior to applying paint.
- Allow the epoxy to cure for 3-5 days in hot weather or 7 days in cold weather. Scrub the surface using soap and water using a stiff brush.
- Sand the surface using 80-grit sandpaper (preferably wet). Remove the sanding residue by wiping down the surface with Mineral Spirits or Naphtha using the two-rag method.
- Apply a primer approved for use over clear epoxy as per manufacturer’s instructions.
Application Instructions
- Apply 2-3 coats of Nautical Enamel followed by the proper dry times. Wiping down the surface with Mineral Spirits or Naphtha using the two-rag method between coats to remove any surface contaminates.
- Sanding between coats is required if the time between coats exceeds 30 days. If sanding is required, sand with 220-grit sandpaper, remove sanding residues with Mineral Spirits or Naphtha using the two-rag method.
