MerCruiser Water Pump Kits
Wholesale Marine carries replacement MerCruiser water pumps and impeller kits for most every generation of MerCruiser from Sierra, and Mercury-MerCruiser. While most boaters prefer to have a reliable marine technician inspect and replace their boat’s water pump with a new part from our MerCruiser water pump kit selection, here are the steps to take for determined DIYers and technicians alike:
Replacing Your MerCruiser Water Pump:
- To access the water pump housing, drop the gearcase. This requires removing the
mounting bolts. - Locate the bolt under the trim tab. Mark its position to make its reassembly easier.
- Using a fitting socket on the four mounting bolts, remove the water pump assembly.
- If your MerCruiser impeller’s vanes are no longer straight, the component needs to be replaced. (Tip: Fresh sealant on the gaskets will reduce leaks.)
- Push the new impeller into the housing liner twisting slightly clockwise.
- Place the impeller key flat on the driveshaft. Next, lower the housing and impeller assembly into place. Be careful not to over-tighten the mounting screws.
Water pump impellers are one of the more vulnerable pump assembly parts. MerCruiser impellers should be inspected once a year, or every 100 hours, and replaced as needed. Impellers are a series of rubber vanes that are molded around a hub that rotates. Friction, corrosion, water, sand, disuse, and heat can all abrade and degrade the rubber. Also, when the vanes are bent, this is an indication that replacement is required.

FAQs
How do I know if my MerCruiser water pump or impeller needs to be replaced?
Common signs of a failing water pump or impeller include overheating, reduced water flow from the cooling system, engine alarms, and visible wear or bending of the impeller vanes during inspection.
Can I replace my MerCruiser water pump or impeller myself?
Yes, replacing a MerCruiser water pump or impeller is a DIY-friendly task if you have the right tools and follow the proper steps. However, if you're unsure, it's best to have a certified marine technician handle the replacement.
What causes a MerCruiser impeller to wear out prematurely?
Impellers wear out due to friction, heat, corrosion, and exposure to sand or debris. Running the engine without water can also quickly destroy the impeller, as it relies on water for lubrication.
