      Many components work together to make your Mercury engine run smoothly. Marine fuel pumps are necessary for engine operation. Engines require gas to run, and fuel pumps supply that gas under pressure to ensure both smooth running and efficient engine operation. The fuel pump’s job is to carry the fuel from the gas tank directly to the individual cylinders. This operation must be performed under high pressure to ensure good combustion. If the engine is found to have good compression, then the spark plugs are checked next. No spark, possibly a tune-up is in order.       If the spark plugs are not the culprit, it’s time to inspect the fuel system. Your technician will start at the fuel tank and work toward the engine, checking the screen, anti-siphon valve, and the separating filter. If all looks well, the carburetor filters may be due for a cleaning. The good news about marine fuel pumps is that when there are engine problems, they are rarely the culprit. So rebuilding or replacing boat fuel pumps is usually a last resort.
