How To Apply Pettit Easypoxy Topside Paint
- Pettit EZ Poxy is best applied in temperatures between 50°F and 90°F, with low humidity and no rain. Avoid painting in direct sunlight or extreme heat, which may affect drying and leveling.
- Prepare your surface for paint application. Refer to our “Non-Fiberglass Surface Preparation” guide below.
- Stir the paint thoroughly before use.
- Apply a thin, even coat with a brush, roller, or spray, and let it dry overnight.
- Lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper.
- Apply a second coat and let it cure for 8 to 24 hours, depending on your area’s temperatures.
Application Notes
- Dry Film Thickness per Coat: 1.5 mils (3 wet mils)
- Coverage: 600 sq. ft/gal.
- Application Temp: 50°F Min. / 90°F Max.
- Avoid applying multiple coats in a single day. Applying excessively thick layers over 4 wet mils can prevent proper drying and produce a soft, under-cured paint film.
- Avoid painting on extremely humid days (90°+ RH) or when it’s raining.
- Avoid painting outdoors in the late afternoon, as dew can negatively impact the wet paint film and compromise the finish.
- In cooler temperatures, ensure that the air and surface temperatures stay at or above 50°F for at least 8 hours after application to allow proper curing.
Although thinning Pettit EZ Poxy paint is not recommended for brush or roller applications, up to 10% of Pettit 120 Brushing Thinner can be added in hot weather to help maintain a wet edge. For optimal results on large, smooth surfaces, use a short roller and level it with the tip of a brush.
For traditional spray applications, thin Pettit EZ-Poxy using 15 to 20% of Pettit 121 Spraying Thinner. For airless sprays, use up to 5% and a tip size between 0.11 and 0.15 inches in diameter for proper application.

Bare Wood
- Sand bare wood with 80 to 120 grit sandpaper until smooth. If the wood has been epoxied, scrub thoroughly with an ammonia/water solution, sand with 120 grit, and clean with Pettit 120 Thinner.
- Use 7050 EZ-Fair Epoxy Fairing Compound to fill screw heads or small holes. Sand the filled areas flush and clean with the same thinner.
- Apply a coat of 2018 EZ WoodSealer to seal the porous grain. For epoxied wood, skip the sealer and move directly to priming.
- Apply one or two coats of 6149 EZ Prime, sanding each coat with 80-120 grit sandpaper and cleaning with Pettit 120 Thinner between coats until a smooth base is achieved.
- Once the primed surface is clean and smooth, proceed with the first coat of Pettit Easypoxy for a durable, high-gloss finish.
Steel Hulls
- Clean the surface to a bright finish by sandblasting or grinding, then remove any blast residue.
- Apply a coat of 6980 Rustlok Primer and let it dry until tacky. For rough surfaces, apply a coat of 6627 Tie-Coat Primer. Sand before cleaning with Pettit 120 Thinner.
- Repeat as needed until smooth, then apply the first coat of Pettit EZ Poxy.
Aluminum
- Remove oil and grease using Pettit 120 Thinner.
- Use a medium-grit emery cloth to remove oxidation, etch the surface, and then clean off any sanding residue.
- Apply a thin coat of 6455/044 Metal Primer and let it dry for at least two hours. Optionally, use 6149 EZ Prime for additional smoothing before applying the first coat
